  • Introduction

    The School of Basic Medical Sciences(BMS) was formerly known as the teaching and research group of core curriculum in 1958 and formally established in 2005 . The School consists of six departments includingthe Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology, the Department of Pathogenic Biology and Immunology, the Department of Morphology, the Department of Medical Functional Science, the Department of Biological Science, the Department of Forensic Medicine. Currently, the School of BMS has over 189 teaching and administrative staffs. Among them, it has 141 full time teachers, of which 26 have senior professional and technical positions, 42 have associate senior professional and technical positions, 94 have doctoral degrees and 10 PhD supervisors and 47 Master supervisors.

    The School of BMS has established cooperative relationships with well-known universities and Research Institutions such as National Institutes of Health (USA), Monash University, the University of Queensland,University of Alberta, Jeonnam National University and Siberian State Medical University.


    Main Areas of Research

    The School focuses on the following major research areas: Hypoxia Medicine, Pathogen Biology and Immunology, Tissue Repair and Regenerative Medicine, Neurobiology, and Tumor Biology.


    Key Laboratories

    The School of BMS has the National Demonstration Center for Experimental Basic Medicine Education(WMU)and Provincial Teaching Demonstration  Center of Medical Functional Experiment. The Human Body Science Museum in the School is a Provincial Science Popularization Education Base. There is currently ZheJiang International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of tumor related pathogens and host interactions and Wenzhou City key laboratory of tumor related pathogens and immunity and Jointly establish the Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Intelligent Cancer Biomarker Discovery and Translation with the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University and and Jointly establish Zhejiang-Russian Cooperation Lab in Basic Medical Science and intelligent Medicine with Siberian State Medical University.


    Programs

    The goal and mission of the school is to provide premedical education and to cultivate future educationists and scientists in the biomedical sciences field with outstanding innovation and international vision. The school has a holistic training system for education of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. It has 1 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites and 1 Primary Category Discipline PhD Programs (Basic Medicine Sciences) and 3 Primary Category Discipline Master Programs (Basic Medical Sciences, Forensic Medicine, Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences), 3 national first-class course and 51 national first-class courses, 1 national brand course of English teaching for international students and 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching project. In 2023, an undergraduate program Basic Medical Sciences Majors was set up with the name "BMS Zhou Jian Innovation Class ". At present, the total enrollment of full-time students amounts to 309, including 164 postgraduate students (21 doctorate students).

    The school of BMS admitting international students to proceed to the degree of Master's and PhD in Basic Medicial Sciences include Pathology and Pathophysiology, Pathogenic Biology, Immunology, Human Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Physiology, Medical Biochemistry, Forensic Medicine and Molecular Medicine.

    (1) Undergraduate programs:

    · Five-year Bachelor Program major in Basic Medical Sciences

    · Five-year Bachelor Program major in Forensic Medicine

    (2) Graduate Degree Programs:

    · Three-year Master’s Program major in Basic Medical Sciences

    · Three-year Master’s Program major in Forensic Medicine

    · Three-year Master’s Program major in Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences

    · Three-year PhD Program major in Basic Medical Sciences

    With the support of promotion plans from country and university, the conditions of the school for scientific research and teaching have been continuously improved. In recent years, The school has undertaken more than 120 scientific research projects of National and Provincial level. The discipline of Basic Medical Sciences is a first-classdiscipline (Class B) in Zhejiang Province and has been shortlisted for the Best Chinese Subjects Ranking 2024 and ranked in the 301-400 range of ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects(GRAS) in 2024. The research fields of Immunology and Microbiology have entered the top 1% list released by Essential Science Indicators(ESI).
