WMU has established friendly exchange and cooperative relations with more than 130 overseas educational and scientific research institutions

  • By positively advancing internationalization ofeducation,WMU has established friendlyexchange and cooperative relations with morethan 170 overseas education andresearchinstitutions around the world. Cooperation withthese partners has been made in various formsincluding overseas student exchange and jointeducation programs, faculty academic exchanges,research cooperation,Chinese-foreignCooperation in Running Schools, internationalstudents education, Confucius Institute, overseaseducation collaboration, etc.


    1. Joint Research

    WMU has built more than 12 international joint research platforms with overseas partners, mainly in the areas of ophthalmology and optometry, clinical medical science, biology, pharmaceutical science and other featured disciplines.


    2. Joint Degree Program ducation

    (Approved by the Ministry of Education of P.R.China)

    ● In 2000, joint M.S/0.D program in collaboration with New England College of Optometry, USA, the first of its kind in China, was approved by the State Council.

    ● In 2016, the joint PhD program in clinical medicine (translational medicine) with Lund University, Sweden, was approved by the Ministry of Education. This is the first joint program in translational medicine in China.

    ● In 2018, the joint Master program in Nursing with Burapha University, Thailand was approved by the Ministry of Education. This is the first joint Master program in Nursing in Zhejiang Province, China.

    ● In 2019, the joint PhD program in Pharmacy with Chonnam National University, South Korea was approved by the Ministry of Education. This is the first joint PhD program in Pharmacy in China.

    ● In 2020, the Alberta Institute, Wenzhou Medical University was approved by the Ministry of Education, which is the first joint institute in Clinical Medicine in China.


    3. Faculty and Students Exchange

    WMU strongly encourages its faculty to participate in academic exchanges with overseas universities and institutions. Currently, WMU has several overseas training bases, like the University of Alberta, University of Western Australia, Monash University, Medical University of Lublin, Chiang Mai University, etc. WMU has established more than 70 student exchange programs and has sent out more than 5,500 students to participate in dual-degree programs, short-term exchange programs, clinical rotation and summer programs in the past ten years.


    4.Confucius Institutes

    The Confucius Institute established in collaboration with Burapha University, Thailand in 2006,is the first overseas Confucius Institute set up by a Zhejiang provincial university and also the first one that featured in traditional Chinese medicine in the world. In 2018,WMU won the honorary title of "Outstanding Confucius Institute Chinese Partner".


    5. Foreign Experts

    WMU attaches great importance to the employment of foreign experts. WMU started to recruit foreign experts in 1976. The University is also the first qualified organization to hire foreign experts in Wenzhou approved by the State Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs. Currently, WMU employs 141 foreign experts andteachers. They have made tremendous contributions to the development of WMU in bringing in advanced science and technology, enhancing discipline, development, improving education quality, cultivating high-level talents and promoting culture exchanges. By 2024, there are 62 foreign experts who have been awarded government friendship awards,including 2 Friendship Awards, 25 Zhejiang West Lake Friendship Awards, 35 Yandang Friendship Awards.
