Graduate Education in WMU

  • Graduate education in Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) adheres to the concept that education should be led by academy and focus on integrity as well as ability. We have made great progress in development of disciplines, increasing of degree programs, optimization of supervisor team, expansion of graduate education and improvement of education quality.

    WMU began to recruit graduates in 1978 with the right to confer doctoral degree, being one of the first institutions in China to be authorized to confer master’s degree. There are 10 key disciplines of Zhejiang Province in WMU. Moreover, WMU has primary-discipline doctoral program and postdoctoral program in Clinical Medicine as well as 8 primary-discipline master’s degree programs and 6 professional master’s programs. There is 1 national engineering research center, 1 "2011 Collaborative Innovation Center", 2 primary disciplines with "priority among priorities" of Zhejiang Province, 13 provincial and ministerial key laboratories (research center) and 1 state key laboratory founded by Zhejiang Province with the Ministry of Science and Technology. The discipline pattern with rational structure and distinctive advantages is the guarantee for the school to be one of the medical universities founded by the Ministry of Education, the National Health and Family Planning Commission and Zhejiang Provincial Government.

    There are 1037 graduate supervisors in WMU, including 126 doctoral supervisors. Many outstanding teachers have been selected for various talent programs funded by the national or provincial government, such as "1000 Talent Program", "10000 Talent Program", "Yangtze River Scholars Program", "National Talents Project" or "Program for New Century Excellent Talents" of the Ministry of Education. Some excellent teachers were introduced as the provincial specialists, distinguished professors of provincial universities or the young experts of nation or the National Health and Family Planning Commission with outstanding contributions.

    Currently there are almost 3000 graduates in WMU. In 2012, WMU firstly carried out the merging of professional-degree graduate education in Clinical Medicine with the Program of Standardized Residents Training in Zhejiang Province. In 2013, WMU became one of the 64 universities that were the first reform pilots of training mode of professional-degree graduates majoring in Clinical Medicine. In 2015, WMU was approved by the Ministry of Education to begin the “5+3” education mode for undergraduates specialized in Clinical Medicine or Ophthalmology. WMU was also selected by the Ministry of Education as the first pilot to have graduate course construction. With the steady development of graduate education quality, the number of papers and SCI citation rate of graduates has increased year by year. Graduate employment rate has reached more than 99% over years and the employment units remain at high the level of quality.

    WMU actively promotes the internationalization of graduate education. We have communicated and cooperated with 22 countries (regions), over 100 universities, as well as education and scientific research institutions. WMU has successfully established a high-level Sino-foreign cooperative education mode in different ways, including cooperation in education, research scholars communications, student exchanges and joint training programs. There are cooperative programs with New England College of Optometry (USA) and Lund University (Sweden). Cooperating with Lublinie University to recruit foreign students is a great breakthrough for Chinese medical universities to have students abroad. WMU has founded Confucious College with the Thailand Burapha University and New York State University separately.
