Recently, the 24th China University Swimming Championship (Southern Division) concluded successfully. The event gathered over 800 elite athletes from 105 universities across the country. Amidst fierce competition, the swimming team of Wenzhou Medical University—coached by Shi Yinan from the Department of Sports Science—delivered an outstanding performance. Despite fielding a compact squad of only two female swimmers, Zhang Xiaorui and Lin Jiabao, the team shone brightly by claiming an impressive tally of two gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal.

On the opening day of the tournament, Zhang Xiaorui from the Alberta Institute put in a solid showing to win the silver medal in the Women's Group A 50m Breaststroke. However, her physical condition took an abrupt turn for the worse shortly after. Prior to the subsequent Women's Group A 100m Breaststroke final, exhaustion coupled with the intense competitive environment triggered a severe case of heatstroke and high fever, putting her participation in the event at risk.Confronted with the dual challenges of a high fever and physical exhaustion, Zhang made a resolute decision to rise to the occasion. Standing on the starting block, her eyes blazed with unwavering determination. As the starting gun fired, she dived into the pool, channeling the discomfort in her body into the power behind every stroke and kick. This was no longer merely a race against opponents, but a tough battle against herself. In the end, with extraordinary perseverance, she overcame all hardships to seize the gold medal in the Women's Group A 100m Breaststroke. This victory perfectly embodies the spirit of sportsmanship, and the luster of the medal is further enhanced by her remarkable resilience.
In a similarly stellar performance, Lin Jiabao from the First School of Clinical Medicine (School of Information and Engineering) fully demonstrated the outstanding strength of Wenzhou Medical University's athletes. She kicked off her campaign with a calm and steady performance in the highly competitive Women's 200m Freestyle, securing the bronze medal. Buoyed by this initial podium finish, Lin went from strength to strength. In the even more demanding Women's 400m Freestyle, she showcased exceptional stamina and dominant form, cruising to the championship with a convincing lead. This gold medal not only marked the pinnacle of her competitive performance but also highlighted her remarkable adaptability—transforming from a steady start into an unstoppable force in the final stretch.

Having returned triumphant with honors, the two athletes have set their sights on broader horizons. The experience gained from this championship, especially the ordeal of persisting through adversity, is a life asset far more valuable than the medals themselves, and it stands as a testament to the excellent quality of Wenzhou Medical University students. Zhang Xiaorui and Lin Jiabao have both expressed their commitment to doubling down on their training efforts. Their goal is to push beyond their limits on even grander stages in the future and bring more glory to their alma mater.
