• Another Breakthrough! WMU’s Pharmacology and Toxicology Discipline Enters Top 1‰ in ESI Global Rankings for the First Time
  • Author:Graduate School    Date:May 18, 2023
  • On May 11, Clarivate Analytics released the latest ESI data, and WMU ranked 746th in the world and 70th among Chinese mainland universities. The pharmacology and toxicology discipline at WMU is the only new discipline that entered the global top 1‰ in colleges and universities in the province in this period, and the second discipline shortlisted for the global top 1‰ in our university after clinical medicine. This is yet another major breakthrough in the construction of the disciplines of WMU.

ESI Global Rankings of Pharmacology and Toxicology in May 2023

Global Rankings of Pharmacology and Toxicology of Wenzhou Medical University (2020.1-2023.5)

According to the latest data, the pharmacology and toxicology discipline of WMU ranks the top 0.973‰ globally at the 114th place. Up to now, there are two ESI top 1‰ disciplines, namely clinical medicine, and pharmacology and toxicology, and seven ESI top 1% disciplines, including biology and chemistry, molecular biology and genetics, neuroscience and behavior, chemistry, materials sciences, immunology, and engineering at WMU.

The pharmacy discipline at WMU has a postdoctoral research mobile station, a first-level doctoral program, and the first Sino-foreign cooperative doctoral program in pharmacy in China. The discipline is closely integrated with clinical practice and adheres to the development mindset of building a "comprehensive pharmaceutical sciences" discipline integrating "research, manufacturing, education, and medicine". It has been selected as a Provincial Advantageous Discipline with Unique Features, a Provincial Level-A Discipline of Distinction, and a Provincial Top Priority Discipline in Zhejiang province. It has been ranked top 10% in ShanghaiRanking’s “Best Chinese Subjects Ranking” for three consecutive years. With two national platforms, the National Engineering Research Center for Growth Factor Drugs and Protein Preparations and the National Key Laboratory of Macromolecular Drugs and Large-scale Preparation, the discipline leads the country and takes the leading position in the world in the field of growth factor protein drug research and development, and has achieved outstanding results in the fifth round of subject evaluation and ESI subject rankings.

ESI is an analytical database established on the basis of collecting and analyzing more than 10 million pieces of literature from more than 11,000 academic journals included in ISI Web of Science (SCIE/SSCI), which is an analysis and evaluation tool for measuring the scientific research performance of universities and tracking scientific development trends. It is also one of the important references for evaluating the development of disciplines in the world.

Since the implementation of the national "Double First-class" Initiative, our university has actively explored practice, taken bold steps to reform and innovate around the three "focuses", and taken discipline construction as the engine to solidly promote the pace of "double first-class" university construction. The discipline of pharmacy plays a pivotal role in the university's first-class discipline construction planning and is one of the important "top disciplines" in the university's construction of a discipline pattern combining "top disciplines and advantageous disciplines". WMU has led the building of first-class disciplines with its characteristics and focused on solving problems with targeted measures and a coordinated approach. Facing the major needs of China's biomedical field and regional economic and social development, the pharmacy discipline has built a first-class platform, gathered first-class talents, carried out first-class research, and produced first-class results. The discipline has cooperated with the Zhejiang Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine, Vision and Brain Health (Oujiang Laboratory) and China Gene Medicine Valley, and strived to create a discipline development ecology covering talent training, basic research, new drug industrialization, and clinical application so as to continuously elevate and maintain its international role as a “pacesetter” in the field of growth factor drug research and development.
