  • Recently, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced the first batch of MOE key laboratories during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. Wenzhou Medical University got approval for the establishment of the "MOE Key Laboratory of Pediatric Anesthesiology".

The laboratory, led by Professor Jin Shengwei at Wenzhou Medical University and based on the anesthesia department and other related disciplines of the Second Affiliated Hospital, aims to address the high mortality and complications associated with pediatric perioperative anesthesia. The laboratory will focus on basic and clinical research in four areas: the mechanisms for cardiovascular and brain damage during the perioperative period, the effects of anesthesia on the neuroreproduction of children, the study of pediatric precision pharmacology, and the development of devices and promotion of appropriate techniques for new pediatric anesthesia. The laboratory is committed to improving the quality of treatment for pediatric perioperative patients, reducing postoperative mortality and complications, and actively implementing the Healthy China initiative.

The anesthesiology discipline at WMU features the integration of medical treatment, education, and scientific research. It has been approved as a national clinical trial institution for anesthesia drugs, a national first-class undergraduate major construction site, a provincial key laboratory, and a first-class discipline at the provincial level. In recent years, significant breakthroughs have been made in scientific research. In 2020, the pediatric anesthesia demonstration new drug clinical evaluation platform won funding from the Major New Drugs Innovation and Development Scheme of the National Science and Technology Projects. In 2021, the discipline published a piece of high-quality paper in JAMA. Besides, it ranked 7th among all anesthesiology disciplines nationwide according to the STEM Rankings 2021.

The MOE Key Laboratory is a major facilitator of the construction of "double first-class" universities, an important part of the national scientific and technological innovation system, and a base for cultivating innovative talents in higher education. It plays an important role in discipline development, scientific and technological innovation, and talent cultivation.

In recent years, WMU has thoroughly studied and implemented General Secretary Xi Jinping's important observations on scientific and technological innovation, adhered to the "four orientations," systematically promoted organized scientific research, improved the top-level plans for the university's scientific research platform system, and implemented an integrated construction of "platform-talent-project." Currently, there are 45 provincial and ministerial level scientific research platforms, including 9 at the national level and 8 at the ministerial level. The university will take the construction of the MOE key laboratory as an opportunity to strengthen distinctive disciplinary construction and effectively enhance the quality of scientific research platforms, providing a strong underpinning for the building of a "double first-class" university.
