According to the latest data, the clinical medicine discipline of our school ranks 0.989‰ internationally at the 579th place. Up to now, nine disciplines of our school have entered the top 1% according to the ESI global rankings, including clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and chemistry, molecular biology and genetics, neuroscience and behavior, chemistry, materials sciences, immunology, and engineering.

WMU’s clinical medicine discipline started its five-year undergraduate program in 1958. It is one of the first disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees and provide "5+3" integrated programs in China. In addition, the discipline offers Primary Category Discipline PhD program and has established a postdoctoral scientific research mobile station. What's more, the discipline has been selected as one of the provincial top priority disciplines, provincial level-A disciplines of distinction, provincial advantageous and characteristic disciplines of key universities, ranking top 20% in ShanghaiRanking’s “Best Chinese Subjects Ranking” in 2022. Clinical medicine, which is crucial for the university’s development, has achieved historic breakthroughs in the fifth round of subject evaluation and ESI rankings through more than 40 years of efforts.

ESI is an analytical database collecting and analyzing more than 10 million pieces of literature from more than 11,000 academic journals employed by ISI Web of Science (SCIE/SSCI). It is an analysis and evaluation tool to measure the scientific research performance of universities and reveal emerging science trend, which is internationally recognized as one of the important references for discipline performance evaluation.

Since the implementation of the national "Double First-Class" Initiative, WMU has actively carried out exploration and experimentation and taken bold steps to pursue reform and innovation around the three "focuses". It has taken discipline construction as the engine to solidly promote the building of a "double first-class" university. It has adhered to the guidance of Party building, promoted discipline development, deepened interdisciplinary integration, and innovated discipline management through high-quality Party building. Guided by the national strategic needs and the principles of supporting the advantageous, characteristic, and needed, WMU has promoted the effective allocation of resources and elements and focused its efforts on building advantageous and characteristic disciplines. Moreover, our school has established a dynamic mechanism for adjusting discipline classification management and improved discipline performance evaluation through digital empowerment. What's more, it has implemented the construction plan and related policies to develop advantageous and characteristic discipline groups and promoted the integration of clinical medicine with basic medicine and pharmacy. WMU has established a postgraduate training base alliance with 24 hospitals, key laboratories, and research institutes in the province to promote Zhejiang’s practice of the "two pioneers", advance the Healthy China Initiative, create a new model of "Mountain-Sea Collaboration", and provide new momentum for discipline construction.
