The lab, internationally known as “Wenzhou Model” in high education of Ophthalmology and Optometry, is the largest, oldest and highest-level research institution for vision research. The logarithmic visual acuity chart invited by the lab won the National Scientific Conference Award in 1978 and was determined as state compulsory standard（GB-11533-89）. in 1995, Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology and Optometry was established. In 2005, the lab was approved to establish State Key Laboratory Cultivation Base and Key Laboratory of Vision Science, Ministry of Health P.R. China.
The lab has taken on and completed 973 Program (Chief Scientist), National Key Technology Research and Development Program of China during the “Tenth Five-Year” Plan Period, the National Key Technology Research and Development Program during the “Eleventh Five-year “Plan Period, 863 Program, General Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Innovation Fund, Major Program of Science Technology Department of Zhejiang Province, Research Grant from Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health, International Science and Technology Cooperation Projects of China, Major Project Supported by Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation of China. Also, as the only representative from China, it participated in the 7th Flagship Program of European Union- Human Brain Project.
The staff include 50 professional researchers, mainly from “the Thousand Talents Plan”, Yangtse Rive Scholar, Awardees of National Natural Science Foundation of China for the Youth, “Ten Thousand Talent Program”, Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University of Ministry of Education of China, One Hundred Talents Plan of Zhejiang Province, Qianjiang Talents, the Young and Middle-aged Academic Leader in Universities in Zhejiang Province, Health High-level Innovative Talents of Zhejiang Province.
The lab focuses on myopia basics, clinic research, pathogenesis of important eye diseases, treatment research, basics and clinic research of refractive surgery, visual genetics and development research, research and development of ophthalmology and optometry engineering technology and products. Research content features interdisciplinarity, especially transformation and application of basic research and clinic results. What’s more, it keeps pace with international level in research technology and academic thinking. The facility, technology, talents and research have already developed to a certain scale. The lab has exerted some influence in the related fields in the world, setting up a number of research interests with advantages and characteristics.
The lab aims to be a world key laboratory with high autonomy of knowledge, technological innovation capacity, carrying on national and provincial key projects, cultivating and gathering influential academic leaders at home and abroad which comprise high-quality, high-level research team. Also, making outstanding achievements in Ophthalmology and Optometry and promoting transformation of scientific results, which help the lab to be the platform and base for high-level talents cultivation and high-tech results transformation and make a big difference in international field of Ophthalmology and Optometry and Vision Science.
