  • Key Laboratory of Orthopaedics of Zhejiang Province
  • The Key Laboratory of Orthopedics of Zhejiang Province was founded as the orthopedic laboratory of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University in 2003. In 2009, it obtained funding from Zhejiang university priority subjects (surgery - orthopedics). In 2011, the minimally invasive orthopedic surgery and micro-surgery were awarded as the Zhejiang Academy of Medical Innovation academic disciplines and medical support, respectively. In 2012, it was re-funded by University priority level subjects. In 2013, our laboratory was awarded as the Key Laboratory of Orthopedics of Zhejiang Province. Currently, our laboratory has research area of 2200m2, equipment worth more than 25 million, and more than 40 research staff. It has now become the largest orthopedic research center in Zhejiang province.

    In recent years, we have emphasized on the concept of minimally invasive orthopedics, and focused on the basic pathogenesis and the treatment, including the development of bone repair biomaterials for clinical bone diseases. In the latest three years, we have published more than 100 SCI paper and the first book of minimally invasive spine surgery in China. We were funded 16 national grants and 20 provincial grants, totally achieving 18 million research grants. We were also granted 19 patents for invention and 6 patents for utility models; one of them has been industrialized and achieved 20 million production values. Moreover, we were honored with 9 provincial and above awards, including the Second Class of National Science and Technology Award and first class of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award.

    3. Research Interests

    The Key Laboratory of Orthopaedics of Zhejiang Province features minimally invasive orthopedics. There are five main research areas:

    (1) Pathogenesis and therapeutics of musculoskeletal disorders

    The current research focus on the molecular basis and pathogenesis of clinical disease, including the degeneration of lumbar intervertebral disc, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, none-healing bone fractures, tendinitis and spinal cord injury. Based on the pathogenesis, the research of new target drugs or biomaterials that can help with the healing of these diseases has also been included.

    (2) Fixation devices design and clinical application

    Our research includes the development of the internal fracture fixation and the intelligent minimally invasive orthopedic devices. Meanwhile, we have also been studied the basic mechanical study of similar kinds of internal  fixation devices

    (3) Biomechanics

       This area includes the research of 3D stability study of spine, bone tolerance and bone fracture under stress, computer simulated skeletal musculature and the analysis of biomechanics of bone using three-dimensional finite element method.

    (4) Flaps survival and wound healing

       We also focus on the pathogenesis and therapy of chronic wounds caused by diabetes or other diseases and the hypertrophy scar. The design of innovative skin flaps to help their survival has also been investigated in our lab.

    (5) Bone tissue engineering and related biomaterials.

    The current research focuses on developing the growth factors and cells based bone grafts to promote bone tissue regeneration for critical sized bone defect and none-healing bone injury.

    5. Technology platform

      Our lab has several technology platforms, including the cellular and molecular research, biomechanical characterization and analysis research, mechanical loaded culture system, materials preparation and characterization, and in vivo animal study research platforms

    (1) Cellular and molecular research

    This lab mainly equipped with cell incubator, hypoxia incubator, real-time cell analysis system, fluorescence microscopes, cell counter, real-time PCR system, gel imaging system, electrophoresis machine, Nanodrop, microplate reader.

    (2) Biomechanical characterization and analysis research

    This lab mainly equipped with BOSE Biomechanical testing system,  Shining 3D-ScannerMIMICS softwarefootscan system.

    (3) Mechanical loaded cell culture system

    This lab mainly equipped with Flexcell stress loaded culture system, Instron L30-1C tissue stress loaded culture system;

    (4) Materials preparation and characterization

    This lab mainly equipped with pure water manufacturing equipment, freeze drying machine, vacuum drying oven, 3D printer and QCM.

    (5) Animal study

    This lab mainly equipped with operating microscope, hard sectioning microtom, freezing microtome, small animal X-ray imaging system, small animal anesthesia system, and Laser doppler perfusion imager.
