• A tribute to Qian Li’s Abdominal Surgery! The First Affiliated Hospital of WMU establishes Qian Li College of Surgery

  • He was a great name in medicine, adhering to the belief that "Medicine requires lofty ethics and knowledge has no limit.” His book Abdominal Surgery, a rare masterpiece in clinical surgery, has influenced a generation of surgeons in China and is called the "pillow book" by Huang Jiefu, former vice minister of the Ministry of Health. He was a famous surgeon in China, Professor Qian Li, the pioneer of oncology surgery in Zhejiang province and the former director of the surgery department of the First Affiliated Hospital.

    In order to carry forward the spirit of Professor Qian Li, promote the overall development of surgery in clinical practice, teaching, and research, cultivate a group of excellent surgical professionals, and benefit more patients with quality medical services, the First Affiliated Hospital of WMU held a series of activities to pay tribute to Qian Li and his Abdominal Surgery on the morning of May 7th and established the Qian Li College of Surgery.

    At the opening ceremony of the event, President Li Xiaokun and Shen Xian, Secretary of the Party Committee of the First Affiliated Hospital of WMU, jointly unveiled the Qian Li College of Surgery. Li Xiaokun presented Shen Xian and Zhang Qiyu with the letters of appointment of the dean and the honorary dean of the Qian Li College of Surgery respectively.

    It is understood that the Qian Li College of Surgery, as a new platform for the training of surgical talents at the First Affiliated Hospital of WMU, will continue to cultivate innovative young surgeons with sound knowledge and practical skills. With its abundant curriculum resources, the platform will integrate theories such as basic surgery principles, latest guidelines and consensus, and medical research with practical education and teaching, and design systematic and upgraded learning materials for young surgeons at different stages.

    At the ceremony, Academician Zheng Shusen of Shulan Hospital and Academician Fan Jia, president of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, attended the meeting online and made keynote speeches. Zhang Chunwu, vice president of the First Affiliated Hospital of WMU, Zhang Qiyu, editor-in-chief of Qian Li Abdominal Surgery, as well as representatives of the hospital's surgery departments, administrative departments, and student representatives all took part in this event.

    Li Xiaokun said in his speech that the launch of the "Paying Tribute to Qian Li Abdominal Surgery" event series and the establishment of the Qian Li College of Surgery are important measures to pass the cultural roots of WMU on and cultivate medical talents with sentiment toward our motherland and the spirit of compassion. He urged the hospital to take this opportunity, make good use of the profound cultural heritage of its surgery department, and enhance systematic planning from the aspects of talent training, discipline construction, scientific research, clinical technology, medical services, and cultural heritage preservation, to promote the comprehensive construction of the surgery ecology and the development of oncology, surgical emergency, anesthesia and other related disciplines, stay ahead of the curve on wound repair and tumor treatment across the country, drive the overall improvement of the hospital and WMU, and contribute to the development of medical cause and the protection of people's lives and health.

    Shen Xian said that the First Affiliated Hospital of WMU will follow the footsteps of its predecessors, carry forward Professor Qian Li's firm political character, selfless dedication to the family and country, pioneering spirit of hard work, and high morality of plain-living, and continue to make strides on the path pioneered by Professor Qian Li, so as to benefit more patients with high-quality medical services.

    Zhang Qiyu fondly reviewed the extraordinary life of Professor Qian Li, his mentor. He said that the establishment of Qian Li College of Surgery would spur the development of the discipline, and encouraged all surgeons at the First Affiliated Hospital to take advantage of this platform and make greater contributions to the treatment of critical and complex diseases and the development of the university and the hospital.

    At the event, Li Xiaokun and Shen Xian led the experts present, together with online guests Li Hong, vice president of Ningbo Medical Center Lihuili Hospital, Mo Jinggang, president of Taizhou Central Hospital, Shao Chuxiao, secretary of the Party Committee of Lishui People's Hospital, and Zhang Ruili, secretary of the Party Committee of Taizhou Hospital, to write their signatures to pay tribute to Qian Li's abdominal surgery.

    The experts at the event pressed the start button together to launch a series of activities to pay tribute to Professor Qian Li. Next, the hospital will successively carry out live surgical broadcasts, academic salons and other activities, and invite top young surgical experts nationwide to discuss hot topics in surgery.

    In the academician lecture session, Academician Zheng Shusen delivered a report on "Innovations of Liver Transplantation", introducing the latest progress in liver transplantation, especially living donor liver transplantation and split liver transplantation. He gave vivid examples from his many years of medical career and encouraged young surgeons to love their careers despite hardship and toil and devote themselves to their work. Academician Fan Jia gave a speech on "Progress in Surgical Treatment Techniques and Strategies for Liver Cancer", showing the latest progress in surgical treatment and comprehensive treatment strategies for liver cancer. He introduced the staging of liver cancer in China and the 2022 Edition of China's Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Liver Cancer, which are more in line with China's national conditions. As for the future diagnosis and treatment of, and research on liver cancer, he emphasized the significance of early diagnosis and treatment, standardized treatment, comprehensive treatment, translational medicine, and evidence-based medicine.
