Shu Wei, member of the Leading Party Members Group and secretary of the Secretariat of the China Association for Science and Technology, Liu Xiaotao, member of the Standing Committee of the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee and secretary of the Wenzhou Municipal Party Committee, Du Yubo, member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and president of China Association of Higher Education, made remarks.
Zhong Nanshan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and winner of the “Medal of the Republic”, Michael Houghton, winner of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Ge Junbo, academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, Fu Xiaobing, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Zhang Yingze, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Wu Pexin, secretary of the Peking Union Medical College Hospital Party Committee, delivered keynote speeches respectively. Zhang Haidi pointed out that rehabilitation is an important life issue and an urgent need of society. Liu Xiaotao pointed out that in promoting common prosperity and creating a better life, we must first protect people’s physical and mental health. Wenzhou is speeding up building a regional hub of medical care and health preservation and striving to forge its brand in medical care. The city has gathered expert teams led by Academician Li Xiaokun and Academician Song Weihong, established Oujiang Laboratory focusing on life sciences, and fully supported the sound development of WMU which gives full play to its medical service advantages and serves more than 30 million people in southern Fujian, northern Fujian, and eastern Jiangxi. Wenzhou will make full use of the combined advantages of natural, medical, cultural, and other resources, further promote the integration of medical care and health preservation, and focus on key areas such as optometry, biomedicine, medical devices, and comprehensive rehabilitation, so as to drive industrial development, enhance innovation, and benefit people’s livelihood with comprehensive health care.
Du Yubo pointed out that the current COVID-19 epidemic has brought unprecedented challenges to the national public health system. At such a special historical moment, the International Forum on Comprehensive Health Care held at WMU, as one of the most important academic events of the summit, has built a high-end medical health platform for young scientists, which is of positive significance to the vision of building a global community of shared future, the global medical industry, and technological innovation. He hoped that International Forum on Comprehensive Health Care will take root in the summit, strengthen scientific and technological empowerment, constantly deepen the exchange-interaction-sharing mechanism, and keep exploring technology and personnel exchange and integration, so as to benefit the national people’s well-being from the achievements of scientific and technological innovation.
Wu Shicai said that the China Rehabilitation Research Center and Wenzhou Medical University have jointly responded to the national key projects on active health and population aging, and reached a broad consensus on the development status and path of China’s rehabilitation undertakings. The two sides will further deepen cooperation to comprehensively improve the capacity and level of rehabilitation services. He hoped that more young scientists could join the rehabilitation course and contribute Chinese wisdom and solutions to the internationalization of rehabilitation and the disabled people’s affairs together.
Zhong Nanshan shared China’s prevention measures and experience taken at several crucial junctures since the spread of COVID-19. He said that the normalization of the society requires our efforts to ensure all people eligible for vaccination have access to it, develop herd immunity, and normalize the prevention and control system involving the whole community. If most people are vaccinated, the spread of COVID-19 will be effectively curbed. He also warned that the proportion of vaccine receivers aged over 60 needs to be increased and in particular, vaccine rollouts among people aged over 70 should be accelerated this year.
Michael Houghton’s speech is about advancing medical science to control disease by the end of this century. He introduced how he identified the non-A non-B viral hepatitis, later termed the hepatitis C virus, from chimpanzee serum, and developed a blood test in the 1990s for cirrhosis of liver cancer patients with remarkable results.
Ge Junbo told the story about himself and his team who have long been committed to promoting technological innovation and transformation of achievements in the diagnosis and treatment of major cardiovascular diseases in China. After more than a decade of research and development, he and his team have developed the first fully biodegradable stent in China and got approval for market launch. He encouraged medical scientific and technological workers to dare to challenge the original innovation in practical work, rather than mere imitation or imitation innovation.
Fu Xiaobing shared his knowledge of regenerative medicine. He said, in addition to the repair and regeneration of damaged tissue, regenerative medicine could be widely used for rehabilitation function reconstruction, anti-aging, beauty services, and so on. Fu Xiaobing demonstrated the latest progress in his internationally recognized theories, technologies, and products using pictures and videos.
Through a series of vivid stories, Zhang Yingze pointed out that researchers must establish cultural confidence, have the courage to “doubt”, think outside the box, apply reverse thinking, find the essence of the issue, pay attention to the reform and innovation of the key steps in clinical scientific research, and give full play to the leveraging role of little brilliant ideas.
Wu Peixin introduced the national medical innovation system and the clinical medical research system, considering medical scientific and technological innovation as the core and most important part of life science, and a logical choice in dealing with major health challenges and improving people’s well-being. He shared his unique insights and thoughts on establishing and improving a modern hospital management system and upholding and strengthening the CPC’s overall leadership over public hospitals.
