  • The 2021 World Young Scientists Summit (WYSS 2021) opened today at Wenzhou Medical University. Carrying forward the theme of "Converging the World's Talents, Creating a Better Future", and focusing on the annual topic of "Responsibility, Innovation, Cooperation-Youth in Action for Sustainable Development Goals", the summit has built an open platform for young talents to exchange thoughts, explore new opportunities, and break new ground.

Wang Hao, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Acting Governor of Zhejiang, and Zhang Yuzhuo, Secretary of the Leading Party Members Group of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Shu Wei, member of the Leading Party Members Group and Secretary of the Secretariat of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology, presided over the summit. Liu Xiaotao, member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and Secretary of the Wenzhou Municipal Party Committee, made an introductory speech. Provincial and municipal leaders Lu Shan, Cai Xiujun, Yao Ke, Yao Gaoyuan, Ge Yiping, Chen Zuorong, school leaders Lv Yijun and Li Xiaokun attended the summit. More than 130 academicians and Nobel Prize winners at home and abroad, including Peter Gluckman, President of the International Council for Science, and Zhong Nanshan, participated in the event online or offline.

Wang Hao pointed out that in the message sent to the first World Young Scientists Summit in 2019, President Xi said, “Let more young scientific and technological talents show their ambitions and achieve their dreams, and let scientific and technological innovation lead economic and social development.” This has set the tone for our work on science, technology and talent, strengthened Zhejiang's determination to give top priority to talents and innovation, and built up Zhejiang's confidence in accelerating the construction of a high-level innovative province. Over the past two years, Zhejiang has sped up scientific and technological innovation and institutional innovation, actively built a high-level innovation platform system, implemented the "double increase" action for high-tech enterprises and small and medium-sized technological enterprises, and done everything possible to attract, retain, and make good use of talents. The emerging momentum continues to increase and the sustainability is significantly enhanced. At present, Zhejiang is shouldering the historical responsibility of building an "important window" and the important mission of driving high-quality development of a common prosperity demonstration zone. We need innovation and talents more than any period in history. We must thoroughly study and implement the spirit of the Sixth Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee and President Xi Jinping’s important remarks on talents and scientific and technological innovation, and take scientific and technological self-reliance as the strategic underpinning for development. We should focus on the construction of three scientific and technological innovation highlands: "Internet+", life and health, and new materials, accelerate the construction of major scientific research platforms led by the Hangzhou West Science and Technology Corridor, intensify core technology research, speed up the development of high-tech industries, focus on building a global talent pool, comprehensively optimize the environment for innovation and entrepreneurship, and strive to build a nationally influential science and technology innovation center, to provide a strong impetus for high-quality development and construction of a common prosperity demonstration zone. We warmly welcome all scientists and researchers, especially the young, to choose Zhejiang and take root in Zhejiang. It is hoped that Wenzhou will give full play to the advantages of hosting the World Young Scientists Summit, strengthen policy support, build innovative carriers, promote practical cooperation, to enable more young scientific and technological talents to realize their ambitions and achieve their dreams.

Zhang Yuzhuo pointed out that scientific and technological innovation is playing an increasingly important role in the sustainable development of mankind nowadays. Creating a better future for building a community with a shared future for mankind requires young talents in science and technology to demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility. Responding to challenges is the common mission of young talents, open cooperation is the common choice of young talents, and science and technology for good is the common value of young talents. We should encourage the young generation to devote themselves to innovation and creation, and contribute their youthful, dynamic, and diversified wisdom to building a community with a shared future for mankind. We should create a mutually beneficial and shared environment for innovation and foster an open, mutual trust, and inclusive youth scientific and technological innovation community. We should formulate the philosophy of science and technology for good, carry forward the spirit of science and scientists, and guide young scientific and technological talents to warm the world and bring glory to human civilization with scientific rationality and humanistic care.

Liu Xiaotao said that the WYSS is establishing a global communication circle that smooths the full chain and enlightens wisdom. As the venue of the summit, Wenzhou bears in mind President Xi Jinping's earnest entrustment to "continue the history of innovation", and has thoroughly implemented the strategy of giving priority to innovation and using the summit as the fulcrum to enhance high-quality development. We will faithfully practice the "double eight strategy", strive to create an "important window", fully activate the "science and technology +" engine, broaden the channels for turning market entities to innovators, scientific research achievements to innovation momentum, and innovation elements to innovation ecosystem, so as to open a new chapter of innovation in Wenzhou. It is hoped that people could take the summit as a platform to build a bridge of win-win cooperation, pay attention to, understand, and appreciate Wenzhou, enjoy a beautiful China in such a warm city, and create a better future together in the city of innovation.

Peter Gluckman said in the video speech that COVID-19 has shown that the world is tightly interconnected in all aspects. Technology will affect the way we develop, communicate, interact, and live. Science needs to be better integrated into society, policy formulation, and more open international exchanges and cooperation. In all these activities, young scientists have a unique position and more young scientists and organizations should play a greater role.

Zhong Nanshan, winner of the Republic Medal and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said in a video speech that the epidemic will not stop exchanges and cooperation among young scientists around the world, nor will it stop the responsible young generation from unremitting exploration and efforts to "jointly create a better future for mankind". Over the past two years, the summit has achieved fruitful results with the joint efforts of all walks of life. It is believed that it will focus on global issues, youth growth, and scientific and technological innovation to continuously explore and develop, summarize and innovate, and obtain brilliant results.

At the opening ceremony, the progress of the key tasks of the summit including the preparation of the World Young Scientist Awards and the preparation of the World Federation of Young Scientists was demonstrated. The representatives of Wenzhou academic circles and industrial and commercial circles established the World Young Scientists Growth Foundation. The site of the World Young Scientist Summit in the Wenzhou Oujiangkou Industrial Cluster was released. On behalf of the summit, Fan Daiming, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, announced the WYSS "Summer School" program. Jin Donghan, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Tianjin University, Hu Hailan, winner of the 24th World Outstanding Female Scientist Award and professor of Zhejiang University, Dan Kammen, energy expert and Nobel Prize winner, and Michel Spiro, president of International Union of Pure and Applied Physics made the keynote reports.

The World Young Scientist Summit is one of the important results of the strategic cooperation agreement signed between the China Association for Science and Technology and the Zhejiang Provincial People's Government. It is an annual event for global high-level young talents initiated and co-sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology and the Zhejiang Provincial Government. In 2019, President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the first summit. In 2020, United Nations Secretary-General Guterres sent a letter to all WYSS participants. Many WYSS activities have been incorporated into the framework of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. The summit has become one of the important international events in the field of science and technology, an important brand of China's youth science and technology diplomacy, an innovation platform linking global resources, and an important window for Zhejiang to open up to the outside world.

This summit continued the theme of "Converging the World's Talents, Creating a Better Future", with the annual topic of “Responsibility, Innovation, Cooperation-Youth in Action for Sustainable Development Goals”, centered on the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and national key strategies such as the “Belt and Road Initiative” and common prosperity, and carried out in-depth discussions in cutting-edge scientific fields including climate change, life and health, digital economy, intelligent computing, future technology, carbon dioxide peaking and carbon neutrality, and new materials.

During the summit, our university has held a series of online and offline activities, including the International Forum on Comprehensive Health Care, the 20th Anniversary the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and National Pharmacy Headmaster Forum, the Southern Zhejiang Cardiovascular Forum, Kangning International Conference of Psychiatry, the Yangtze River Delta Medical Education Association Annual Conference and Residential Training Forum, International Forum on Brain Health and Functional Rehabilitation, and Scientific Conference on Myopia Prevention and Control.
