• WMU’s medical team aiding CAR return home loaded with honors
  • On January 17, the 17th batch of the Chinese medical team accomplished the 18-month medical assistance mission in the Central African Republic (CAR) and returned to Wenzhou with great honors. The team included Gong Xianhui from Eye Hospital of WMU, Ji Ling from The First Affiliated Hospital of WMU, Xia Boxi and Hu Yingchun from The Second Affiliated Hospital and Yuying Children's Hospital of WMU.

People who came to greet them at Wenzhou Longwan International Airport were Zhang Chengbin, member of the WMU Party Committee, director of the Organization Department and director of the United Front Work Department, Xia Jinglin, Party Secretary of the First Affiliated Hospital, Chu Maoping, Party Secretary of the Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhang Jian, Party Secretary of the Eye Hospital, Wang Yuanyuan, deputy director of the International Affairs Office of the university, as well as representatives of Health Commission of Zhejiang Province, Health Commission of Wenzhou and Wenzhou Public Hospital Management Center.

The medical team consisting of many capable doctors from various hospitals in Wenzhou was formed and started training in early 2019 and arrived in the CAR on June 22 to provide medical assistance. They set up departments of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology, Ophthalmology, and Acupuncture in the Hospital of Friendship in the capital Bangui to provide medical services for local people.

Within more than one and a half years, the four team members from our university have surmounted all sorts of difficulties, such as the torridity of the climate, the prevalence of the disease, the hardships of the environment as well as the inadequacy of the supplies. They bore in mind the great trust of the Party and the nation, gave full play to their expertise, and saved the lives of many dying patients. Despite the epidemic, the team members worked dutifully with local hospitals to prevent and combat the epidemic, bringing China's experience in fighting against the disease to the CAR. The excellent work of the medical team has been highly praised by both the government and the people of the CAR. On December 26, 2020, the CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadera awarded each member of the team an "officer" medal.

“Welcome home! Thank you all for your efforts!” Said Zhang Chengbin. The medical team has overcome numerous difficulties and completed the mission successfully. They have perfectly interpreted the medical assistance spirits of “fearless of hardship, willing to contribute, healing the wounded, saving the dying, and working with boundless love” with practical actions and satisfactory results. Zhang earnestly hoped that all teachers and students could take over the baton from the medical aid team members, preserve and carry forward the spirit of selfless dedication, and make greater contributions to the Party and the people.

After a brief ceremony, team members took a special car to the designated hotel for quarantine observation and recuperation.

Since 1973, our university and its affiliated hospitals have actively responded to the advocacy of the National Health Commission for foreign medical aid work and successively sent a total of 77 members to participate in foreign medical aid activities.
