A Monash University delegation consisting of Prof John Carroll, Head of School of Biomedical Sciences and Director of Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI), Prof Trevor Lithgow, ARC Australian Laureate Fellow, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences, and professor of microbiology in BDI, and Dr Yue Qu, research fellow in microbiology and infectious diseases in BDI and Executive Director of BDI-WMU Alliance has visited WMU in recent days for cooperation and exchanges. WMU President Li Xiaokun and vice president Jin Shengwei met with the delegation for cooperation meeting. Heads of relevant departments including the Department of Personnel, the Technology Department, the International Affairs Office, the School of Postgraduate Students, the Second Affiliated Hospital and the Center of Excellence also attended the meeting.
Li Xiaokun extended a warm welcome to the Monash delegation at the meeting. He said, Monash is ranked in the top 100 world universities, and WMU has become an influential medical university in the southeast coast of China which integrating medical education, medical services and life science research. In order to promote construction of Double First Class University Plan, it is necessary for WMU to introduce international high-quality scientific research resources to improve the level of discipline and research. The WMU-Monash Joint Research Institute of Biomedicine would be an effective attempt on the resource complementarity and coordinated development of WMU and Monash. In addition, it would be of great significance to the cultivation of talents and the improvement of scientific research capability of WMU.
Prof John Carroll was very satisfied and had great expectations for the joint institute located in WMU. He suggested that the two sides focus on the fields of cancer, infections, reproductive medicine and medical genetics, and gradually launch scientific research projects. Meanwhile, the two sides will recruit top scientists and researchers globally to join the joint institute so as to assist with the research projects.
Other principal topics of discussion at the meeting included the operation mode and investment of the joint institute, talents introduction and students cultivation, on which the two sides have reached a consensus.
The Monash delegation also visited the First Affiliated Hospital, the Second Affiliated Hospital and the Eye Hospital of WMU.
