So far, the Affiliated Eye Hospital, WMU has achieved the “Grand Slam” of hosting three national platforms for research and development including the State Key Laboratory, the National Engineering Technology Research Center and the National Center for Clinical Medical Research of Ophthalmology, Optometry and Vision Science.
The National Center for Clinical Medical Research (the Center) is the highest level clinical medical research carrier and platform in the country. Jointly launched and constructed by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Health Commission, the Logistics Support Department of the Central Military Commission and the State Food and Drug Administration, the Center aims to be a national science and technology innovation base that is guided by clinical applications, hosted by medical institutions, and supported by collaborative networks to carry out targeted tasks such as clinical research, personnel training, and transfer of scientific & technological achievements. Along with 17 institutions on the newly released list, the Affiliated Eye Hospital, WMU was selected to be the host hospital of the National Research Center for the Clinical Medical Research for Otorhinolaryngology (Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Diseases) (Ophthalmology, Eye Diseases) as its discipline/department of ophthalmology is ranked the first in China.
Reportedly, having achieved many firsts in the field of ophthalmology, the Affiliated Eye Hospital, WMU has built up a system of ophthalmology and optometry integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, industrialization, public welfare and promotion. In the past five years, the Hospital has been ranking first in China in terms of the number of national key R&D projects, the number of national invention patents granted, and the number of products awarded with CFDA product registration certificates in the field of ophthalmology. It ranks top by academic influence and scientific and technological output in the field of ophthalmology on the rankings of “Chinese Hospital Science and Technology Value” (formerly, the list of Chinese Hospitals by Science and Technology Impact) released by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. It has been ranking the first among all the medical institutions in China by the discipline of ophthalmology in terms of Nature Index. The Hospital established China’s first systematic clinical research center for ophthalmology, which is the only institution that has passed the FERCAP international ethics certification. The National Center for Otorhinolaryngology (Ophthalmology) Clinical Medical Research will further strengthen the construction of the medical science and technology innovation system, optimize the clinical medical research organization model, and accelerate the technological innovation and transfer of research achievements. In the future, the Center will closely focus on the needs for developing China’s ophthalmology science and technology and the major needs of eye disease prevention and control. Aiming at the international forefront of research, the Center will collaborate with 1000 hospitals and 100 health checkup centers across the country to establish a national open and shared eye disease prevention and research collaboration platform, the largest collection of eye organism bank with more than 2 million samples, as well as an ophthalmology pathology center, a big data analysis center, and an ophthalmology video reading center.
The success for the Affiliated Eye Hospital, WMU of being selected on the “National Team” for clinical medical research will further improve Wenzhou’s medical science and technology innovation system, and boost its construction of national independent innovation demonstration zone. It will accelerate the technological innovation and transfer of achievements in the field of life and health to speed up the cultivation of health and life industry as a leading sector for Wenzhou.
