  • WMU won the International Strategy of the Year nomination for its international development
  • Times Higher Education (THE) held THE Asia Universities Summit at Khalifa University in the United Arab Emirates between 30 April and 2 May, announcing winners of the inaugural THE Awards Asia 2019. WMU stood out among numerous universities in running for the awards and was nominated the International Strategy of the Year category. 

    THE Awards is widely recognized as the ‘Oscars of higher education’. This year THE launched its first THE Awards Asia celebrating excellence and publicizing experience of Asian universities. The inaugural awards were given across five categories: Outstanding Support for Students; International Strategy of the Year; Technological Innovation of the Year; Teaching and Learning Strategy of the Year; and Leadership and Management Team of the Year. 33 Asian institutions have made the shortlist for inaugural awards and 5 of them won, among which 4 universities from China were nominated the International Strategy of the Year category.

    At the Summit, representatives of WMU introduced in detail its strengths, discipline characteristics and strategic measures to promote internationalization to the representatives of other Asian universities, and interacted with them actively. Moreover, WMU’s academic achievements in its characteristic disciplines such as ophthalmology & optometry and pharmacy were published in the THE Asia University Rankings launched at the Summit.

    In 2018, WMU has strengthened educational cooperation with overseas partners in an all-round way. It has established some new dual-degree programs for graduate students and was authorized to set up a State International Joint Research Center. In addition, WMU was building strategic discipline platforms with some worldwide famous institutions such as Monash University and the University of Queensland. It has also encouraged international exchanges and communications of staff and students, carried out and promoted medical education and charity activities globally. WMU’s international strategy has made impressive achievements.
