In the evening of 8th March, the awarding ceremony of 2018 Chinese Women Scientists Social Service Award was held in the opera hall of Central Conservatory of Music. Professor Lu Fan, Party Secretary of Wenzhou Medical University won the Chinese Women Scientists Social Service Award. Mr. Chen Zhu, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and Academician Han Qide, honorary chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology attended the ceremony.
The China Association for Women Scientists is a mass organization for women scientist across the country. It is also a member organization of the National Women Federation and China Association for Science and Technology. The Chinese Women Scientists Social Service Award was first set up in 2015, aiming at commending the outstanding representatives of women scientists who serve the development of the economy and society, uniting the majority of female scientists to play a greater role in serving the economic and social development by giving full play to their professional strengths and serving the society. There are 7 outstanding women scientists and 1 organization won the award this year, Professor Lu Fan is the only award winner of Zhejiang Province.
Professor Lu Fan is an ophthalmologist and expert in the field of vision and has great international influence in myopia and children's vision research. She is the chairman of IAOA Asia, chairman of Vision Health Committee of China Science and Technology Industry Association, and vice chairman of Ophthalmologist Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. As one of the main pioneers of Chinese ophthalmology and optometry, Professor Lu Fan and her team established the "Chinese Model" of higher education of ophthalmology and optometry and build up the first ophthalmology hospital in China, which integrates ophthalmology diagnosis and treatment with visual function correction. She has made important contributions to the development of ophthalmology and optometry education and ophthalmology and optometry diagnosis and treatment model in China. Professor Lu Fan has presided over more than 20 major research projects and won awards such as the second prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award and the second prize of National Teaching Achievements Award.
Professor Lu Fan not only makes remarkable achievements in the professional field, but also takes the practice of caring and compassion as a lifelong career pursuit and has carried out a large number of social welfare activities on the prevention and control of blindness and teenager myopia. The "Journey of Light" activity led by her has cured millions of patients with eye diseases in Sichuan, Tiber and Qinghai Plateau in more than 10 consecutive years. The activity has also played a professional advantage to provide teenagers with experience and demonstration on myopia prevention and control and made outstanding contributions to the development of China's visual health public welfare undertakings.
On that night, the 10th "Science and Art - International Women's Day Gathering" concert was held to enable women scientists to relax their body and mind and feel the charm of the integration of science and art in their own festival.
Representatives from National Women Federation, the China Association of Science and Technology, China Academy of Science, China Academy of Engineering, NPC, CPPCC, 3 generations of women scientists, winners of China Youth Science and Technology Award, winners of Chinese Young Women Scientists Award, associations and about 600 teachers and students from Beijing universities attended the activity.
