  • WMU has two more disciplines ranking top 1% in the World ESI, hitting a record high in terms of total number of disciplines ranking top 1% in the world and ESI overall ranking
  • According to the latest updates by the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database released in March 2019, Discipline of Molecular Biology & Genetics and Discipline of Materials Sciences of Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) have been newly selected into the top 1% of ESI global rankings for the first time. Up to now, the number of WMU’s disciplines ranking top 1% in the world has increased from 3 at the start of the efforts to build WMU into a provincial key university in September, 2017 to 5. WMU has set a record high in terms of overall ESI ranking, reaching the 74th nationwide, 8th among the province-ministry collaborative medical university, first place among Zhejiang provincial universities and colleges, and the 1237th worldwide.

    WMU ranks 772nd among the total 785 institutions on the global ESI ranking of Discipline of Molecular Biology & Genetics, and 867th among the total 878 institutions on the global ESI ranking of Discipline of Materials Sciences. Rankings of WMU’s disciplines previously selected into the top 1% of ESI global rankings have significantly improved: WMU ranks 860th among the total 4287 institutions on the global ESI ranking of Discipline of Clinical Medicine, improving by 4 places. WMU ranks 447th among the total 876 institutions on the global ESI ranking of Discipline of Pharmacology and Toxicology, improving by 20 places. WMU ranks 875th among the total 1035 institutions on the global ESI ranking of Discipline of Biology and Biochemistry, improving by 14 places.

    According to current-issue ESI statistics of academic papers, the total number of citations from 10539 papers in various disciplines published by WMU has amounted to 93921 or 8.91 citations per paper. 46 papers published by WMU are selected as ESI highly cited papers including 27 papers published by WMU employees as principal or correspondence authors. School of Ophthalmology & Optometry/School of Biomedical Engineering ranks top among WMU’s schools and colleges by publishing 16 highly cited papers. The most cited is the academic paper published by the research team led by Professor Dai Liming in the chemical journal of ACS NANO Journal (IF=13.942) with 2327 citations. Moreover, papers published by research teams under the leadership of Professor Qu Jia, Prof. Tan Yi, Prof. Yu Zhen and other scholars have more than one hundred citations per paper.
