By October, 2018, generation after generation of people at Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) have been carrying the torch of its tradition and values for sixty years marked with glorious flowers in spring and solid fruits in autumn. On the morning of October 28th, a ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) was held on its campus with flowers blooming like a piece of brocade and osmanthus aroma in the air. More than 3,000 people including guests from all walks of life, alumni at home and abroad, teachers and students attended the grand event.

Attending the ceremony were also leaders from relevant departments of the state, provinces and cities, and local party committees and government leaders from Zhejiang, Wenzhou and its counties and districts, leaders of domestic colleges and universities, representatives from the affiliated hospitals, intercollegiate partnership units, units making donations to WMU, alumni at home and abroad, retired cadres and experts, veteran comrades, leaders and experts who have worked at Wenzhou Medical University, and representatives of the faculty and staff and students.
All members of WMU’s Party and Administrative Leadership attended the ceremony presided over by Lu Fan, Secretary of the WMU Party Committee.
Lu Fan expressed her gratitude and respect to teachers and students who are committed to the reform and development of the school and leaders at various levels friends from all walks of life, and the alumni at home and abroad who care and support the development of WMU. As she pointed out, love and care from leaders at all levels and friends has provided WMU with great encouragement and powerful momentum. In the New Era of new circumstances and requirements, Wenzhou Medical University is at a new start to embark on a new journey. We, people at Wenzhou Medical University, filled with confidence, pride and dreams, will surely strive to forge ahead in the great torrent of the New Era. All of us will thoroughly study and implement Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, follow out the spirit of the National Education Conference, and vigorously carry forward the school spirit of “Compassion, Prudence, Diligence and Simplicity; Seeking Truth and Striving to Excel”. We will unswervingly follow the path of quality-based development with characteristics of WMU, never forget why we started and firmly keep in mind our mission, gather in strength and mental efforts to forge ahead, and unremittingly strive to promote building WMU a high-level medical university.
In his speech, President Li Xiaokun gave a passionate account of WMU’s history of tumultuous development and portrayed the magnificent vision of developing WMU into a first-class university. He said, in the past 60 years, WMU has taken a road of growth marked by tenacity and hard work, a road of endeavoring to cultivate talents and serve the community, and a road in pursuit of openness, diversity and excellence. He pointed out, as medical education is on the important mission of cultivating high-quality medical talents, Wenzhou Medical University bears unshirkable duty and responsibility of deepening the reform of talent training mode, improving the quality of medical education, and providing health services for the people. We will not forget why we started and keep firmly in mind our mission. We will unswervingly follow the path under the guidance of the “Eight-Eight Strategy” (More specifically, the strategy of giving full play to eight advantages of Zhejiang Province so as to fulfill eight economic development goals) and proactively pursue the “Healthy China Strategy” and the Strategy to Build Zhejiang a Province with a Strong Higher Education. We will not shrink from being a model of setting high moral values and cultivating talents, the pioneer and pathfinder on the wave of reform and innovation, the leader and pacesetter of university-government cooperation, and the practitioners of advanced culture. We will unswervingly promote the true quality-based development, and unswervingly implement the strategy of “gaining a foothold for the School by disciplines with unique advantages and characteristics, developing the School by culture, and strengthening the School through talents”. We will remain unwavering in pursing the goal to reach “double first-class” status for WMU. We will never get slack in building a domestic first-class and high-level medical university with distinctive characteristics and international influence. We will spare no efforts to cultivate socialist builders and successors who are fully developed in moral, intellectual, and artistic terms. We will strive to write a new chapter in the reform and development of the New Era, and contribute our wisdom and strength to the realization of the goal of “two high level” of Zhejiang Province and the Chinese Dream of the Great Rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

To celebrate its 60th anniversary, in the spirit of “Compassion, Prudence, Diligence and Simplicity; Seeking Truth and Striving to Excel” and by the principle of “Dedication, Simplicity, Truth-seeking and Innovation”, a series of colorful commemorative activities highlighting academics, culture, and alumni including the joint meeting of the presidents and secretaries-general alumni association across the world, the Relay Run to celebrate the 60th anniversary of WMU, the campus mascot and celebration logo launch event and the donation ceremony, Reform and Development Summit Forum for Medical Universities Jointly Constructed by the Ministry of Education, the National Health Commission and the Provincial Government, the launching ceremony of Wenzhou Medical University-Monash University Joint Research Institute, Chinese-Foreign University Presidents Forum, Academician Forum, International Higher Education Forum, Public Welfare Charity Week by affiliated hospitals under and not under the direct administration of WMU in Zhejiang Province and variety shows were held to pass on the school’s heritage, demonstrate its achievements, and make friendly contacts with alumni to rally strength for the future development of WMU.
In the majestic singing of “Ode to the Motherland” full of power and grandeur, the commemorative meeting marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Wenzhou Medical University came to a successful end. The ceremony was broadcast live on the Internet for alumni across the world to watch and bring their blessings to their alma mater.
