On September 1, President Nana Akufo-Addo of the Republic of Ghana met with Lu Fan, secretary of the Party Committee of the Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing. Officials from WMU’s Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, the School of Ophthalmology & Optometry, the Ghana Embassy in China and the Ministry of Finance of Ghana were present at the meeting.
Lu Fan briefed President Nana Akufo-Addo on the cooperation between Wenzhou Medical University and Ghana’s Tamale Teaching Hospital in building the China-Ghana Ophthalmology & Optometry Center. She said, WMU has attached great importance to opening up in education, has established good exchange and cooperation relations with 128 universities and educational research institutions in 28 countries (regions), and has carried out substantive cooperation in the joint training of students, academic exchanges and scientific research cooperation as well as the education for international students in China. Especially, WMU has established a world-renowned “China Model”, securing itself a leading position in China in clinical, scientific and educational aspects in the discipline of Ophthalmology & Optometry. Taking advantage of its quality education and medical resources, WMU is working with Ghana in building an Ophthalmology & Optometry Center to help cultivate more Ophthalmology & Optometry professionals. It is expected that the cooperation will receive the full support from both governments of China and Ghana.
President Nana Akufo-Addo highly affirmed the positive significance of establishing the China-Ghana Ophthalmology & Optometry Center by WMU and Tamale Teaching Hospital. He said that the Ministry of Health of Ghana will be instructed to focus on and accelerate the construction of the cooperation project, making it a ultimately high-level ophthalmology center independently controlled and operated by Ghana.
The joint building of the China-Ghana Ophthalmology & Optometry Center is a response of Wenzhou Medical University to China’s “Belt and Road” initiative and a practice of building a “common community of human destiny”.
Reportedly, Wenzhou Medical University and Ghana’s Tamale Teaching Hospital signed an agreement on the establishment of the China-Ghana Ophthalmology & Optometry Center in July 2018. As agreed, the two sides will cooperate in medical service, public welfare, teaching, and scientific research in the field of Ophthalmology & Optometry. WMU will rely on its technical advantages in the field of Ophthalmology & Optometry, and set up an ophthalmology professional team to provide refresher training for Ghanaian doctors and assist the University for Development Studies, Tamale in building an Ophthalmology & Optometry discipline to ensure the sustainable development of the Center.
