Professor Li Xiaokun, President of Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) was honored with the 12th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology (EST) Award at the 19th Academician Meeting of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the 14th Academician Meeting of the Chinese Academy of Engineering held yesterday. The “Guanghua EST Award” in recognition of scientists and engineers who have made important contributions and achievements in engineering science and technology， is the China’s highest national honor in the field of engineering. President Li is reportedly the first scientist from Wenzhou to win the prize.
At the Guanghua EST Award Ceremony, Bai Chunli, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, presented the award to Li Xiaoxuan. Commenting on winning the highest award in engineering science and technology in China, Li Xiaokun said with emotion: “I feel excited because this is the recognition of my work from my peers. At the same time, it is also a kind of pressure to push me to do my job better.”
The research team led by Prof. Li Xiaorong has long been dedicated to the development of growth factor genetic-engineering drugs. He has developed fibroblast growth factor (FGF) as a clinical drug for the first time in the world and has made outstanding contribution to speeding up China’s development of new genetic-engineering drugs with independent intellectual property rights internationally. For his outstanding contribution in this field, Professor Li has won the first prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, the second prize of National Technological Invention Award, the Heliang-Heli Science and Technology Progress Award and the Tan Jiazhen Life Science Industrialization Award and other major scientific and technological awards.
This time, a total of 30 top experts from medical, aerospace and other fields of engineering won the Guanghua EST prizes including Xu Kuangdi, a senior academician and strategic scientist of the Chinese Academy of Engineering winning Guanghua EST Achievement Award with a bonus of RMB 1 million, and other 29 awarded the Guanghua EST Award with a bonus of RMB 200,000 each. Professor Li Xiaorong plans to donate the prize money to set up a “Guanghua Scholarship” for outstanding students at WMU.
The Chinese Academy of Engineering is responsible for selecting winners of the Guanghua EST Award established by the Guanghua Science and Technology Awards Foundation. The Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology (EST) prizes, composed of “Guanghua EST Achievement Award” and “Guanghua EST Award”, are given out once every two years. The award aims to reward Chinese engineers and scientists who have made outstanding achievements and important contributions in the field of engineering technology and management, inspire their enthusiasm and creativity in engineering technology research, development, and application. Since the first issuance in 1996, a total of 264 top scientists in different engineering disciplines ranging from machinery, transportation, information, electronics, chemicals, metallurgy, materials, energy, mining, civil engineering, water conservancy, construction, environment, agriculture, medicine, and health have been honored with the award.
