Recently, the China Scholarship Council (CSC) published the list of projects winning the funding of its 2018 International Joint Program for Training Innovative Talents. The China-US Joint Doctoral Program in Ophthalmology & Optometry Education at Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) is the only one from Zhejiang on the list.
In 2001,WMU and the New England College of Optometry in the United States jointly launched the China-US Joint Doctoral Program in Ophthalmology & Optometry Education, aming to cultivate high-level talents in the field of Ophthalmology & Optometry. Graduates from the Prgoram will be conferred with both the degree of Doctor of Medicine (Ph.D.) in China and the degree of the Doctor of Optometry (OD) in the US. The Program’s inception marked a major groundbreaking move for the development of Ophthalmology & Optometry education in China. Moreover, it is also the first ever China-foreign joint education program offering US PhD degree that is recognized both by both governments of China and the United States.
The Program’s training mode of “Careful Enrollment, Strict Graduation, Cultural Blending” has become a model for training global leading talents in the field of Ophthalmology & Optometry. Up to now, a total of 29 students from WMU have been enrolled in the Program and 24 have successfully completed their study. Some Program graduates returing to China after graduation have become leaders and kingpins in the Ophthalmology & Optometry education, research and clinic service in China. Some Program graduates have been practicing medicine or teaching in the United States after graduation, playing an important connecting role in the exchange and cooperation between China and the United States.
It is understood that the International Joint Program for Training Innovative Talents organized and implemented by CSC is open to all universities and research institutes across China to better serve the national strategy and comprehensive reforms in education to cultivate innovative, higly demanded, and inter-disciplinary international talents.
