  • WMU Research Findings Selected as China’s Top Ten Advances in Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology in 2017
  •  Recently, a research team of Wenzhou Medical University (WMU), led by Professor Qu Jia and Professor Jin Zibing, found in their study of the early-onset high myopia (EOHM) of children, a novel gene BSG in children with high myopia and the positive correlation between the incidence of high myopia at the time of birth and the parents’ reproductive age. The discovery of the gene has provided a wake-up call for many of today’s late-wed male. “We draw such a conclusion by collecting a large number of samples. Children have an increased probability of developing high myopia-up to a maximum of 50%- if their fathers are older than 35 years of age at the time of their births, even if both of their parents bear no genes for high myopia at all.” said Professor Jin Zibing.

    The findings published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS, one of the most prestigious academic journals in the world categorized Class A of top journals) have been on the list of China’s Top Ten Advances in Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology in 2017 released by China Medicinal Biotech Association (CMBA) and its bimonthly CHINESE MEDICINAL BIOTECHNOLOGY.

    High myopia is a “national disease” that threatens the visual health, quality of life and even the national defense safety. It is the main cause of blindness in China. For a long time, its pathogenesis is very difficult to study, and therefore it faces many challenges in the prevention and control of high myopia. As the main myopia research base in the world, the Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University and the State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Optometry and Vision Science have been focusing on myopia research for a long time. The research team led by Professor Qu Jia and Professor Jin Zibing identified a new cause of high myopia gene BSG through a large sample. They verified the pathogenicity of BSG mutation by expanding population screening and gene knockout mouse model, and clarified the pathogenicity mechanism through mouse model of gene mutation that could cause elongated axial length. The expression of BSG in ciliary body and neuroretina suggests that the target tissue of this kind of high myopia, that is, target tissue, lays a genetic foundation for the prevention and control of high myopia. This is the first gene mutation after verification of gene knock in mouse model of myopia, and has attracted wide attention in the world. The findings also ushered in a new era in the pathogenesis, prevention and control of early onset high myopia.

    The selection of China’s Top Ten Advances in Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology is to fully demonstrate the new progress, new achievements and insight into the development of the industry so as to promote the further development of the industry. The selection procedure is divided into five steps: recommendation declaration, preliminary examination, public selection, expert review and press release. 30 candidate projects were submitted to 11 academicians in relevant fields for examination by correspondence. The 10 winners were selected by secret ballot by criteria including whether the project is technically innovative, of significant economic or social benefits, and plays an obvious role in promoting the industry.
